Indian and Pakistan Armies have traded heavy fire on the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir’s Rajouri district, police said on Wednesday.

The Pakistani Army on Tuesday evening resorted to unprovoked ceasefire violation in the Nowshera sector using mortars, automatics and small arms, a police officer told IANS.

The exchange of fire comes a day after Pakistan foreign minister Khawaja Asif wrote to Indian counterpart Sushma Swaraj urging cooperation in curbing ceasefire violations.

Interestingly, as per data released by the Ministry of Defence, Pakistan, over the past year, has violated the ceasefire 720 times- the highest in seven years.

According to the officer, Pakistan security forces resorted to indiscriminate shelling and firing at Indian positions, who also retaliated strongly and effectively. The exchanges continued for over an hour- he added.

“There was no casualty or damage on our side,” he said.
