In a resounding rejoinder to Congress leader Mani Shankar Aiyar calling him “neech Aadmi”, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday said that remarks of this ilk were indicative of the Congress party’s “Mughlai mindset”.

Without referring to Aiyar by name, the Prime Minister bemoaned that a well-educated, high-ranking politician was resorting to language that was unbecoming in a democracy. “Congress leaders are speaking in a language that is not acceptable in democracy. Congress leader, who has studied in best institutions, served as a diplomat, was a Minister in Cabinet; he said Modi is ‘Neech.’

This is nothing but a Mughlai Mindset,” PM Modi said at a public rally in Gujarat, which goes to polls in two days. Further fuelling the campaign rhetoric, the Prime Minister recounted the slurs hurled at him by various Congress leaders in the past and augured that their feudal mindset will guarantee their defeat in the assembly election.

“We have seen enough insults from them. They insulted me when I was CM. They called me ‘Maut Ka Saudagar’ and wanted to jail me…We have nothing to say to such elements. If anything- we will answer them for their mindset by our votes on 9th and 14th,” he said.  Earlier today, Mani Shankar Aiyar had lashed out at PM Modi for criticizing the Congress and Rahul Gandhi, and dubbed the Prime Minister a “neech aadmi” for playing dirty politics.

“Mujhko lagta hai ki ye aadmi bahut neech kisam ka aadmi hai, isme koi sabhyata nahi hai, or aise mauke par is kisam ki gandi rajniti karne ki kya avashyakta hai?” Aiyar was quoted as saying by news agency.  Furthermore, Aiyar had used the analogy of Mughal heirs to justify Rahul Gandhi’s elevation as the party president, giving Prime Minister Narendra Modi fresh ammunition to attack the Congress scion.

This isn’t the first time the epithet ‘neech’ has been used against the Prime Minister. In 2014, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra had called him out for his “neech rajniti” (low-level politics) while campaigning in the Congress stronghold of Amethi. PM Modi had retorted with, “I cannot deny I was born into a ‘neech jaati’ but is that a crime?”
