Shri Amarnath Shrine Board (SASB) seeks support from all the states and union territories to make medical health certificate compulsory for the applicants’/pilgrim’s for Amarnath yatra-2017. Earlier, board noted that during every yatra a significant number of pilgrims lose their lives due to heart, lung and other medical failures. But this time during post-yatra review, undertaken by the shrine board after every yatra, reveals that many lives could have been saved if the doctors/medical Institutes, nominated by the state/UT governments had issued the required health certificate only to the eligible persons and denied the same to those who have suffered or are presently afflicted by heart, lung or other serious ailments.
This step of board is appreciable and this will reduce the health problems during the course of yatra. The Jammu and Kashmir Governor, N N Vohra who is also the chairman of SASB has urged the Chief Ministers (CMs) of all the states and union territories to issue specific directions to their respective Health Departments to ensure that the doctors nominated to issue the compulsory health certificates to the intending travellers for the next year’s Amarnath Yatra strictly follow the guidelines issued by the shrine board. As in previous yatras, it was observed that due to high latitude terrain of the yatra, several cases of deaths had been reported. The steps which authorities have been taken this time only to give benefit to pilgrims. This decision would be not welcome by some section of the society but in front of human lives this decision is good. This time only fully fit pilgrims will allow to visit Amarnath shrine others applicant who was suffering from any medical ailment will not visit the shrine but they can visit other tourist spots.
This time SASB has drawn attention to the Supreme Court’s judgment of December 2012 which directed the state governments to annually notify a list of doctors/medical institutions, which shall be authorized to issue health certificates on the prescribed format and free of cost to every intending yatri, who shall, thereafter, submit the compulsory health certificate at the registration centre to obtain advance registration for undertaking the pilgrimage on a specific date by a specified route.
