New MV Act: No licence for 16-18 yrs in Jammu

Against the backdrop of introduction of new Motor Vehicles Act in the country from September 1, which has also become applicable in Jammu and Kashmir after state was bifurcated into two Union Territories on August 5, the Regional Transport Jammu has put blanket ban on issuance of licence to the age group of 16 to 18 years, RTO officials said on Friday.

As per RTO Jammu, the driving licence can be issued to the teenagers falling between the age group of 16 to 18 years, only for riding below 50 CC gearless scooties or motorbikes but astonishingly these two wheelers are not available in the Indian markets.

”The available scooties in the market are not below 50 CC and as per set procedure license cannot be issued to the teenagers falling in this age group,” RTO Jammu Dhanatar Singh here said.
